Polypropylene foam plastic

Polypropylene (PP) resin is characterized by its rich raw material source, light weight, superior performance/price ratio, excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, and easy recycling. It is the world's most widely used and fastest-growing resin. one. The main varieties of PD foam are polyurethane (PU), polystyrene (PS) and polyolefin foam. In the foaming process of the PU foaming material, isocyanate residues which are harmful to the human body exist, and the foaming material cannot be recycled. The PS foaming product does not rot and is difficult to be recycled, causing “white pollution” to the surrounding environment. The United Nations Environmental Protection Organization has decided to stop production and use of foamed PS worldwide in 2005. The foamed PP products have excellent thermal stability (up to 130°C) and high temperature dimensional stability, high toughness, tensile strength and impact strength, suitable and supple surface, and excellent microwaves. Adaptability, degradability, and environmental protection are highly valued, making it a good alternative to PS.
At present, some developed countries in the United States, Japan, and Germany are vigorously developing it as a green packaging material that replaces foamed PS. Last year, the University of Wisconsin successfully developed a new type of flexible polypropylene foam plastic. It not only has many advantages of expanded polystyrene, but also solves some of the shortcomings of polystyrene. The production method of this kind of elastic polypropylene foamed plastic is to add a metal catalyst first during the polymerization of propylene molecules, so that the produced polypropylene molecules alternately appear in two types of hard and elastic, forming a block polymer, and then adding special The foaming agent foams to obtain a flexible polypropylene foamed plastic. Its hard molecular chains give the material a certain strength and stability, while the elastic molecular chains give the material tough and flexible properties.
Developments in packaging materials and processing, as well as new packaging designs, tend to be "lightweight," and foamed plastics are more conducive to the lightweighting of plastic packaging. Now microwave ovens and microwave foods have entered people's home life, and the heat-resistant properties of cross-linked foamed PP sheet thermoformed food packaging containers are as high as 130°C (and foaming PS is only 80°C) and can be used in microwave ovens. It is also resistant to boiling water, good in high temperature stability, and comfortable and soft on the surface; its thermoformed plates and bowls are superior to PE and PS in low temperature performance, so that disposable packaging has obvious advantages. According to incomplete statistics, China currently consumes about 18 billion disposable tableware annually. Paper cutlery as an alternative to foamed PS will incur greater environmental hazards due to the large amount of wood consumed. However, PP is easily degraded under the influence of light, heat, and oxygen. In the manufacturing process of PP products, if additives such as antioxidants are not added, the PP products will be aged, degraded, broken down into powder particles in the sun for 15 days or so. Using the inherent characteristics of PP, disposable tableware made of foamed PP sheet is an ideal environmental protection tableware.
At present, it is estimated that a total of 10 billion pieces of fruit, cooked foods, semi-finished products, and net food trays will be used in supermarkets. If half of these disposable cutlery and trays are replaced with cross-linked PP foaming materials, more than 150,000 tons of PP foamed sheets will be required. In addition, PP foam sheets can also be used as personal packaging for computers, cameras, glassware, precision parts, and wearing parts. Because it can be recycled directly and its texture is soft, it will not damage the surface of the package. PP foam can replace PS foam in the field of electrical packaging.
Although foamed PS has a broad market prospect, the production and development of foamed PP has been a research hotspot in countries all over the world. However, due to the crystallization characteristics of PP, the production technology of foamed PP sheet is more difficult. At present, only the United States, Japan, Germany and other countries can produce, but the industrial production of foaming PP in China is still in blank. Therefore, it is imperative to research and develop foamed PP materials that are suitable for the market as soon as possible and realize industrialized production.
