Despite the harsh winter, the grass weaving industry in Suileng County is thriving with strong momentum. Unlike other sectors plagued by rising costs and currency fluctuations, this industry offers stability and hope. What you see here are not worries or uncertainties, but the dedication of local women at work, building better lives and dreaming of a brighter future.
In recent years, the grass and weaving industry has seen consistent growth, becoming a vital part of the local economy. It has provided new job opportunities for many laid-off women, serving as a key source of income for rural families. The industry started with the establishment of a grass weaving factory in Shangji Town, Canglen County, and has since expanded across most towns and villages in the county. Supported by the Grass-Willow Weaving Association in Shangji Town, small and medium-sized factories have been set up in various communities. These factories mainly employ women who handle tasks such as order coordination, technical training, material processing, and product collection, helping them earn a steady income.
The industry has now become a core economic pillar in Kyuhlen County, playing a crucial role in developing the handicraft sector. Today, the grass weaving industry operates under an intensive management system with large-scale production, overcoming the limitations of small-scale household workshops. In 2003, Wang Yan founded a grass weaving factory in Beida Village, followed by a branch in Shangji Town in 2004, and a production site in Guodong and Ping’an Villages in 2007. Starting with just nine people, the group has grown into a factory employing over 2,400 workers and producing more than 300 different products, including grass ropes, rings, bird nests, bowls, bears, fans, and toothpick boxes. Annual production exceeds three million pieces, with an output value exceeding three million yuan. Grass and willow weaving has now become a signature industry in Wuling County.
To further expand the handcraft industry, the Corrugate Women’s Federation has actively worked to establish grass weaving branches in several townships, including Shuangehe River, Deer River, Langzhong, and Houtou. This effort has created broader development opportunities for Caoliubian. Workers in the grass weaving sector earn an average annual income of about 5,000 yuan, helping many laid-off women find stable employment and improve their living conditions. The success of this industry serves as a model of sustainable economic growth and social empowerment in the region.
