The quality of purple sand (Zisha) products has come under intense scrutiny, casting doubt on the authenticity and trustworthiness of "purple sand" items in the eyes of consumers. Despite this, in Guangzhou's Fangcun Southern Tea Market, many teapot vendors have maintained their prices, even as business remains slow.
Reporters visited several large wholesale teapot outlets in the area and found that shopkeepers were struggling with declining sales. At a stall in the Southern District A20, the Changshou Zisha Sales Department shared how the recent media reports about counterfeit teapots had significantly impacted their business. They emphasized that all fake products had been removed from the market. “Those fakes are made in Chaozhou, but we don’t operate there anymore,†one seller explained.
Fangcun is home to dozens of large-scale Yixing teapot wholesalers. “There’s definitely an impact. Business has been really weak lately,†said Xiao Xiao, a tea shop owner. After the media coverage, fewer people came in to buy teapots, and those who did were more cautious.
Although sales have dropped, none of the shops have lowered their prices. Store owners confirmed that no significant price cuts had occurred. “How much should it be sold for?†asked Shaw, a veteran in the purple sand industry. He insisted that they would not reduce prices despite the slow business. Mr. Hu, owner of a Yixing Purple Sand Shop in the Southern Tea Market, believed the recent scandal might actually drive up the value of genuine Zisha teapots. “Prices will definitely rise, but the exact rate is hard to determine.†Many vendors told reporters that the industry was undergoing a consolidation phase, and they were confident that consumer trust would return soon. With fake products being weeded out, real Zisha teapots would likely see a price increase.
The challenge of distinguishing authentic teapots from fakes remains high due to the lack of standardized industry regulations and inconsistent product quality. In the market, teapots range from as low as 6 or 7 yuan to tens of thousands. When reporters asked three different shops about similar-looking purple sand cups, the prices varied greatly—38 yuan, 65 yuan, and 168 yuan respectively. The stores attributed the differences to variations in materials and craftsmanship.
However, for ordinary consumers, identifying the real from the fake is difficult. Sellers repeatedly told reporters, “You get what you pay for.†A good teapot usually has a higher sand content. Yet, when the reporter picked up a 180-yuan teapot recommended by the seller, there was no label indicating its ingredients. Only a few teapots had laser anti-counterfeit labels, while most had no clear identification.
Shaw, the chief of the Zisha industry, mentioned that there are already many fakes on the market. After previous sampling and rectification efforts, he believes the Zisha pot market will become more regulated over time.
