European countries encountered heavy snowfall Yiwu 5,000 Leifeng Cap one day sold out of stock

In recent days, a rare cold snap has swept across Europe, affecting countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Poland. The icy conditions have created an unusual demand for winter essentials, and this global weather shift is already having a ripple effect on markets far away, including Yiwu, China. Every morning, many businesses in Yiwu start their day by scanning international news online, searching for potential business opportunities. Even though the snow is thousands of miles away, Yiwu Trade City has found its own way to capitalize on the situation. Items like hats and scarves are flying off the shelves, with some stalls struggling to keep up with demand. Wu Xiaoxiao, a seller in the third phase of Yiwu Trade City, explained with a smile: “As long as there’s a sneeze in one corner of the world, it sends a tremor through Yiwu’s business community.” One example is the sudden surge in demand for the so-called “Lei Feng Cap,” a simple but practical headwear that has become a must-have in European markets. On one particular day, 5,000 of these caps were sold out within hours. European buyers were even willing to pay premium prices for air freight to get them quickly. A Polish businessman, accompanied by a translator, approached a hat stall in the fourth district of Yiwu Trade City and asked, “Is there any stock left?” He was looking for a waterproof version that could withstand heavy snowfall. The Polish buyer described the need: “It shouldn’t be made of cotton—it should absorb water. It needs to be waterproof to handle the snow.” He was particularly interested in a model with plush ear flaps and a soft forehead cover, which offers extra warmth. The translator explained that due to the severe snowfall in Poland, temperatures had dropped significantly, and the “Lei Feng Cap” was ideal for keeping warm. To deal with the snow, the material needed to be waterproof. Huang Genfu, the stall owner, told reporters that European merchants had been placing large orders recently. His local procurement representatives had been working overtime to restock. “Yesterday, a Polish customer ordered 10,000 of these waterproof ‘Lei Feng Caps,’” he said. His factory can produce about 5,000 caps a day, but once they come off the line, they’re immediately shipped out. Most foreign trade manufacturers operate on a make-to-order basis, meaning no inventory. As a result, Huang found himself unable to meet the sudden demand. “There were more than ten foreign trade representatives on site in a single day, and we had absolutely nothing in stock.” To meet the urgent demand, European buyers are willing to spend more. “I heard that hats are selling out all over Europe. Previously, they used sea freight, which takes about a month or two. But in the past few days, they’ve switched to air transport, which will arrive in just seven days,” Huang added. Meanwhile, the snow has also boosted sales of snow chains and shovels. In the third district of Changchun, known as Yiwu Auto Parts Street, Shao Bo has been running an auto parts store for nearly eight years, focusing on foreign trade. He said that many merchants from Russia and the Middle East have come to his shop for supplies. “Countries experiencing heavy snow often need snow chains, snow shovels, and antifreeze. These items are in high demand,” Shao explained. He noted that most buyers plan ahead, ordering three months in advance. However, if a long-term blizzard hits, they may opt for air freight despite the high cost—up to 26 yuan per kilogram from Yiwu to the Middle East. Some traders take a riskier approach. Gao Bo, who runs a large auto parts shop, shared that one of his customers had placed an order for over 5,000 snow shovels two months ago, and they’ve already sold out. Businesses around the world are closely watching global events, and this year’s “Millennium Arctic” has sparked a new wave of innovation. Many companies are using their creativity to find popular warm-weather products. By catching this snow-related market trend, smart entrepreneurs are reaping the rewards. One such example is Zhu Renmao, owner of a store in the third phase of the commercial city. He recently exported a booming product—a pair of artificial wool boots. “Many women want to show off their long legs, but they suffer from the cold. They don’t just wear short skirts anymore,” Zhu explained. His boots, designed from knee to ankle with artificial fur, offer both fashion and warmth. Zhu reported that both domestic and international sales of this product are doing well, with many European customers showing interest in the new design. In addition to hats and boots, other products are also gaining popularity. At the shoe section of the trade city, Zhou Xiao has also started selling “multi-functional” warm shoes. “These shoes have a leather exterior for waterproofing, a wool interior for warmth, and a scalloped sole for non-slip grip,” he said.
