According to the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps Bureau of Agriculture, in 2010, the organization cultivated 6.8 million mu of cotton, a slight decrease from the 7 million mu planted in 2009. As of the latest reports, a total of 2.947 million tons of raw cotton have been harvested, with an estimated 1.1 million tons of lint expected for the year. This represents a marginal decline compared to the previous year's production of 1,134,300 tons. To ensure a timely harvest, the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps worked closely with other provinces and cities, providing real-time updates on labor needs and actively recruiting workers both within and outside of Xinjiang. A total of 47.58 million laborers were mobilized, ensuring that the cotton harvesting process ran smoothly throughout the season. In 2010, the cost of manual picking ranged from 1.5 to 2.5 yuan per kilogram across different regions. Workers involved in the picking earned an average of 4,664 yuan, which was approximately one-third higher than the earnings in 2009. In response to labor shortages and rising costs, the XPCC has increasingly invested in mechanized cotton picking in recent years. Today, over 17 million mu of cotton is picked by machines, accounting for about 23% of the total cotton planting area in the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. This shift reflects a growing emphasis on efficiency and sustainability in agricultural practices.
