Zisha pot business is not light but Yixing really teapot brewing prices

The quality of purple sand (Zisha) products has come under scrutiny, significantly impacting consumer trust in the authenticity of "purple sand" items. Despite this, in Guangzhou’s Fangcun Southern Tea Market, many shopkeepers are refusing to lower their teapot prices, even as sales remain weak. Reporters visited several large wholesale teapot stores in the area and found that business has been particularly slow. At a stall called Changshou Zisha Sales Department, the owner explained that the recent media coverage on counterfeit teapots had a major impact on their sales. She emphasized that fake products have been largely removed from the market, adding, “These fakes are made in Chaozhou, but we don’t have any stores there anymore.” Fangcun is home to dozens of large-scale Yixing teapot shops. Xiao Xiao, a shop owner, said the situation has been tough: “There must be an impact. Business has been really weak lately.” After the media reports, fewer people are buying teapots, and those who do are more cautious. Although sales are down, none of the shops are cutting prices. Most stall owners confirmed that there hasn’t been a significant drop in teapot prices. Shaw, a shopkeeper at a well-known purple sand store, said, “We won’t lower the price just because of bad business.” Mr. Hu, who runs a Yixing Purple Sand Shop in the market, believes the “Zisha scandal” may actually lead to higher prices for real teapots. “Prices will definitely rise, but the exact rate is hard to say,” he added. Many shopkeepers believe the industry is undergoing consolidation, and they expect market confidence to return quickly once fake products are removed. The challenge lies in distinguishing genuine teapots from fakes. With no standardized industry guidelines and inconsistent product quality, teapots can range from as low as 6 or 7 yuan to tens of thousands. When reporters asked three different shops about similar-looking purple sand cups, the prices ranged from 38 to 168 yuan—more than four times the difference. The shopkeepers explained that this was due to differences in materials and craftsmanship. However, for ordinary consumers, identifying real teapots is difficult. Stall owners often tell buyers, “You get what you pay for.” A good teapot should have a high sand content. But when reporters picked up a 180-yuan teapot recommended by the owner, it had no label indicating its ingredients. Only a few teapots came with laser anti-counterfeit labels, while most had no clear markings. According to Chief Shaw, the market is already flooded with fakes. After previous sampling and rectification efforts, the Zisha pot market is gradually becoming more regulated. He hopes this will help restore consumer confidence and ensure better transparency in the future.
