EU will announce that there will be no ban on playing at present

The European Union has recently acknowledged significant improvements in China's efforts to ensure toy safety, according to sources. EU consumer protection representative Kuneva is set to announce at a press conference on the 22nd that no Chinese toys are currently banned by the EU. The statement highlights that 80% of toys imported into Europe come from China, emphasizing the strong trade relationship between the two regions. In July of last year, the EU RoHS Directive came into effect, restricting certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, which impacted a range of Chinese products, including toys. This regulatory move was one of the early signals of increased scrutiny on imports from China. Following the recall of 21 million Chinese-made toys by Mattel, one of the world’s largest toy manufacturers, EU and U.S. officials called for stricter measures against “Made in China” products. These recalls led to widespread concerns about product safety and negatively affected the reputation of Chinese toys globally. However, the Chinese government responded swiftly, launching a comprehensive campaign to inspect and ban unsafe products. It also submitted detailed reports to the EU and the U.S., demonstrating its commitment to improving quality standards. An EU official noted that the positive response from China was unexpected. “You can’t ban all goods from China one by one,” he said. “It would be both impractical and costly for consumers, especially around the holiday season.” To address the issue, China has significantly increased inspection levels—tenfold in some cases—and initiated local inspections. Additionally, thousands of export permits have been canceled as part of the effort to ensure compliance with international safety standards. The EU is now working closely with China to establish a global toy safety standard. This initiative aims to rebuild consumer confidence and reassure parents ahead of the busy Christmas shopping period. Kuneva is expected to propose a global framework for toy safety, having already discussed the idea with U.S. officials. Major toy companies like Mattel, Hasbro, and Hornby have expressed support for the creation of an independent global institution to regulate toy safety. If the U.S. joins the EU in this effort, it could lead to the development of a universal standard that all countries, including China, would need to follow. This collaboration marks a turning point in international toy safety regulation, reflecting a shared commitment to protecting children and ensuring that only safe products reach the market.
