In recent years, the grass and weaving industry in Suileng County has grown steadily, becoming a vital part of the local economy. It has provided new job opportunities for many laid-off women, helping them return to the workforce and improve their living standards. The industry started with one small factory in Shangji Town, Canglen County, and has since expanded across most towns and villages in the county. Supported by the Grass and Willow Weaving Association in Shangji Town, many small and medium-sized factories have been established, mostly run by women. These factories handle order coordination, technical training, material processing, and product collection, enabling workers to earn a steady income. Today, grass weaving is considered a key handicraft industry and an essential driver of economic growth in Kyuhlen County. The industry has evolved from small-scale household production to large-scale, organized manufacturing. In 2003, Wang Yan founded a grass weaving factory in Beida Village. By 2004, he opened a branch in Shangji Town, and by 2007, a production base in Guodong and Ping'an Villages. Starting with just nine people, the group has now grown into a factory employing over 2,400 individuals and producing more than 300 different items. Products include grass ropes, rings, bird nests, bowls, bears, fans, and toothpick boxes. Annual output exceeds three million pieces, with a total value of over three million yuan. Grass and willow weaving has become a major characteristic industry in Wuling County. To further develop this traditional craft, the Corrugate Women’s Federation has actively promoted the industry, opening branches in towns like Shuangehe River, Deer River, Langzhong, and Houtou. This expansion has created more opportunities for women engaged in grass weaving, with an average annual income of around 5,000 yuan. The industry has not only boosted the local economy but also helped many women find stable employment after being laid off. With continued support and innovation, the grass weaving industry in Suileng County is poised for even greater success in the future.
