how to add belt loops

Hey everyone! I hope your SoHo Shorts sew-along is going great so far. I thought I'd take a little break from the regular schedule to share a quick tutorial on how to add belt loops to your shorts or skirt. It's something you might want to consider if you're planning on wearing a belt with your SoHo Shorts. I'm back with a tutorial on adding belt loops to your SoHo Shorts. Shelley is demonstrating this technique on a pair of shorts, but the same method works for skirts too. If you're at the stage where you're about to attach the waistband, now is the perfect time to decide if you'd like to include belt loops. Start by cutting two strips from your main fabric, each measuring 1.5 inches by 13 inches. These will result in finished belt loops that are 3/8 inch wide when completed. First, press the strips in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together. Unfold this crease, then press each long edge toward the center fold line. Refold the center crease and press the strips in half again lengthwise. Next, edgestitch both long edges of the belt loop strips. Afterward, cut each strip into four equal lengths. Once you've prepared your belt loops, continue constructing your shorts or skirt up until the point where you're ready to attach the waistband (Step 6 in the instructions). Now, pin the belt loops to the top, raw edge of your shorts or skirt. On the front, I’ve placed one belt loop over the centermost pleat lines and another over each pocket edge line. At the back, position the belt loops over the back pleat lines and one on either side of the center back seam, ensuring their edges are about ¼ inch from the center back seam. If you've used a contrasting thread for topstitching or prefer a specific side of the belt loops to face outwards, ensure they're pinned with the correct side facing down. In this step, the side facing down will eventually be the visible side of the belt loop. Attach the waistband as instructed. When pressing the waistband and seam allowances upward, make sure the belt loops remain pointed downward. Stitch across each belt loop approximately ¼ inch below the waistband seam to prevent them from sticking out excessively once finished. After inserting the zipper, finishing the waistband and hemming the shorts according to the instructions, press the belt loops upward. Fold about ¼ inch at the top and edgestitch the top of the belt loop to the waistband. Make sure not to make the belt loop too tight or flat against the waistband, as you'll need some extra room to accommodate the thickness of a belt sliding under the loops. Trim any visible ends of the belt loop from underneath, and if desired, edgestitch again a scant 1/8 inch below the first line of stitching. And there you have it—your SoHo Shorts or Skirt now has a stylish touch with the added belt loops. I really enjoyed sewing these shorts, and I'm thrilled with the fit. Adding the belt loops was such a nice finishing touch. Although it's not quite shorts weather here in Australia, I'm thinking of making another pair in wool to wear over tights during our winter. I hope you're all enjoying some warm weather to celebrate the end of the sew-along! Happy sewing everyone!
