I think we’ve finally hit a groove with our pattern collections. Each year, we churn out tons of designs, but there’s always one unisex/boy’s pattern and usually one fancy dress and one casual dress thrown into the mix. Did you notice that? Well, we were overdue for another fancy dress, especially after the rave reviews we got for the Fairy Tale Dress.
Coincidentally, just as I began brainstorming ideas for this collection, I had a chat with a pal about popular sewing patterns. We reminisced about the old Sugar City Village Frock and how big a hit it was. Do you remember that pattern? So adorable. As we discussed, I found myself pondering shirring, which isn’t something I typically incorporate into my designs. Since I’m not exactly known for ruffles, it seemed logical to experiment with shirring in a dress. Plus, so many of you seem to love smocking, so I wanted to create something that would appeal to those enthusiasts too. More on that later.
Introducing the Croquet Dress. Does its silhouette remind you of the new Garden Party Dress?
We based this design on the Croquet Dress pattern. It shares similar shoulder lines and a front yoke. The back bodice retains the keyhole notch. However, we started tweaking it: adding shirring across the front bodice, including a waistband to keep the shirring in place, and gathering the sleeves to complement the shirring.
This dress may look intricate, but it’s surprisingly straightforward. Honestly, don’t let its appearance scare you off. It’s a fancy dress, yes, but the shirring is easy (if you’ve sewn ruffles or gathers, you can handle shirring—it’s essentially the same thing). Construction-wise, it’s simple—no zippers, no buttonholes! Just a thread chain for the back button at the keyhole opening. We guide you through that step-by-step, though I must say, Kristin’s approach to the thread chain was quite impressive. (And didn’t her version of this pattern turn out beautifully?)
The pattern also includes instructions for making a sleeveless blouse, which I think is super cute paired with a skirt or skinny jeans.
I wanted to make sure these patterns were available to you as soon as possible because Easter dresses are on my mind. What about you?
When S first saw this dress design, she instantly remarked that it looked like Liesl’s dress from *The Sound of Music*, which we watch frequently. Perhaps that subconscious inspiration crept in? It makes sense, considering how much I identify with Liesl. Can you imagine how stunning this pattern would look in chiffon, like Liesl’s dress?
I’m beyond excited to see what you create with this pattern. You can grab it now—plenty of time for Easter sewing—in both paper and digital formats.
