Brazilian shoe exports rose slightly in June

After a three-month decline, Brazil’s footwear exports slightly recovered in June, reaching US$83.36 million, which was a year-on-year increase of 3.5%. However, Brazilian media believes that this data is insufficient to ease the slowdown in exports of footwear products since the beginning of the year.

From January to June, Brazil exported a total of 63.7 million pairs of shoes. The total amount of foreign exchange earned was 522 million U.S. dollars. Compared with the same period of last year, the figure increased by 6.2%, and the total amount fell by 2.6%.

According to analysis by Brazilian professionals, the data shows that the average price of Brazilian footwear products has declined and is currently estimated at approximately US$8.2 per pair.

According to data from Brazil, with the continuous "invasion" of Asian-made shoes to the Brazilian retail market, Asian shoes currently account for 95% of the Brazilian market.

From January to June this year, Brazilian retailers imported more than 10 million pairs of shoes from Vietnam with a total value of 185 million U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 21%; imported 3.46 million pairs of shoes from Indonesia, totaling 57.13 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 26% from the same period; Imported shoes ranked third, with a total of 5.6 million pairs, totaling 32 million US dollars, down 7.2% year-on-year.

"This is the result of free trade. It is by no means what we want to boycott. But what we want to complain about is that most of the prices of these imported shoes are far lower than those in the international market where dumping behavior is considered."

Brazilian industry insiders commented that although the Brazilian government has taken some measures to restrict the import of Asian-made shoes, there are still a large number of Asian products entering the Brazilian market through trans-shipment of third-party tax avoidance.
